1-
Hi Christian, how are you? What are you doin' right
now?
Yo. I´m answering the first question in
an interview that I hope will be a fabulous one.
2-
Your new cd 'Spasms for two',is out. It's pretty short,
though. Is there a reason for that?
Personally,
I get very tired of listening to instrumental guitar-music
and can´t stand it for more than 30 minutes.
I´ve actuallly removed three songs from Spasms
for two, that had tweleve tracks before, but
I still think it´s to long.
3-
The songs show great creativity and some different
styles too!!! Do you have any tip for us about developin'
a personal approach to composition?
Don´t
be afraid to break any rules.
4-
What the hell are you doin' at 2,43 in the track 'Extra
Small'??? Sounds like you're sweepin' harmonics!!!
Did you use an alterate tuning for the song?
I
love experimenting with different tunings and changing
place of the strings, but in this song all strings
are in the right place and dropped a whole step, I
think. The technique at 2:43 is just the ordinary
middlefinger-against-harmonics-above-the-pickups.
Hope I explained that one well.
5-
IA Eklundh's influence is strong in your playin' and
tone... Do you have some other strong influence, or
some interestin' player you like?
Why
people think I sound like IA is probably because this
guitargenre still is pretty new. There are so many
great musicians out there...Kurt Rosenwinkel, Kelly
Joe Phelps, Chris Whitley, John Pointer, to name a
few. Ron Thal...
6-
Your tone is warm and sweet... Can you tell us what
kind of amp you use? What about the power amp and
the preamplifier?
I´m
very grateful for using Hughes & Kettner amps.
They are so versitile, and I can get a really cool
punchy sound with the model I use. It´s a 100w
head and it goes trough a 4x12 speaker with Celestion
G12M´s.
7-
Sounds like you don't use many effects... Do you prefer
the old 'raw'sound?
Yep.
I only use one effect and that is a broken Rocktron-pedal
called Purple haze. I like the thin ugly
sounds it makes and I do a solo with it at
the end of the track Nut. I also play
the introriff in Safety first with it.
I think all effects sounds best if you don´t
use them the way they´re designed for.
8-
Will you do some kind of touring to promote Spasms
for two?
No,
just some clinics where some of the songs will be
played.
9-
You also use some unconventional technique... Do you
plan those strange effects or do they just happen
by playin' around?
I
would lie if I said that all the weird sounds and
techniques happen by coinsidence. I´ve probably
spent the same amount of hours, trying to make the
guitar say OINK or CHAKEWQA,
as I´ve practiced theory and playing. But the
weird stuff always sounds the best when you just throw
it in along with the rest of the improvising instead
of making them a part of a written section.
10-
Do you have some particular method for writin' tunes?
Do you start with a riff, or a melody...?
I
don´t belive you can start with a melody, rhythm,
sound, riff etc. You have to have something to generate
the concept with. I don´t understand people
that sits down and says: hmm...now I´m
going to write a melody that will sound happy...No,
I think I´ll write something angry instead.
I can´t relate to that type of writing at all!
As I said there´s got to be something behind
it. I sometimes start with a situation. Something
that has happened or going to happen and then really
get in to it. How do I feel in this situation? How
does it sound?... Trying to transcribe feelings into
notes, rhythms and sounds is the most basic and fundamental
thing in music. Of course you can go in any direction
and not just limit yourself to stuff that happends.
Take an object, for example. Look at it. How does
it make you feel? What would it sound like if it could?
The object can be anything from an old shoe to a living
person. Anything. There are no limits in music!
Sorry for being so prentious for a while, but I can
go on with this subject for days.
11-
Do you have a routine for practicin' you'd like to
share with us? Do you practice a lot? Do you have
a particular way of trainin' your hands and mind?
The
main thing I tell my guitarstudents is to put everything
they play into some kind of musical context. Just
practicing your licks is pointless if you´re
not able to use them in a unique way and changing
them depending on how the mood is. I think it´s
important to have a beat or chordprogression to play
with.
To play WITH and not on top of.
12-
Can we expect a full lenght album soon?
Only
if a label has the guts to release it...
